Let’s face it. Selective koi spawning for show purposes is not one for the average hobbyist! After all, the koi spawning professionals have the expert knowledge, the controlled environments and the specialized equipment required to accomplish the tasks necessary before, during and after the koi spawn. Fortunately, you as the average hobbyist can adapt many measures to enhance the success of the spontaneous spawning of your precious koi.
Healthy Koi
Well, of course, you need healthy koi in order to encourage spawning! Think of it as survival of the fittest, the fittest being the healthiest, thus, the most able to produce spawn successfully. Since koi reach their sexual maturity at around 3 years of age, you have plenty of time to ensure that your koi fry are sufficiently healthy to breed. Incidentally, the signs of healthy koi include smooth swimming actions, rhythmic breathing gill motions, well-defined and gently tapered bodies, and flawless scales, to name a few.
Koi Pairs
This is very obvious – you must have male and female koi in one pond! Although determining the sex is almost impossible before the koi reaches sexual maturity, you can watch out for physical signs like males have breeding tubers while females noticeably swell before the egg-laying process. You can consult professional breeders and read books on this matter, of course.
Expert breeders recommend an ideal ratio of one female to two males for successful koi spawning. This makes sense in that if one male is unable to perform as expected, the other male ought to step up to the job.
Koi Diet
Expert koi breeders also recommend a healthy protein diet before the carps go into hibernation. The theory behind this practice is that the females will need the extra nutrient in the egg development during the hibernation period. You can either feed your koi with a 35-40 percent fishmeal-based protein food or protein-rich live foods like earthworms, prawns and cockles. However, you must never overfed your koi with protein as severe problems can ensue, thus, preventing successful reproduction.
Environmental Control
As the time for koi reproduction comes nearer, you must separate the female and male carps. This achieves two purposes: one, to prevent the koi from spawning without your knowledge; and two, to prevent the male from constantly pursuing the female. You might want to consider installing a course filter material to harbor and protect the eggs once these are dropped by the female koi. It can be removed if you decide to rear the eggs in a separate aquarium especially as koi have been known to eat their own eggs!
You can then let Mother Nature take over the job in terms of determining the daylight cycles and water temperature necessary to encourage koi mating. After all, Mother Nature has done its job for thousands of years without man’s assistance and it will do the same to your koi now!
Koi spawning is an exact science that the average hobbyist is ill-equipped to deal with on a successful basis. With a little luck, a little observation and a little work, however, you might just be able to undertake koi spawning for your own happiness. Think of it as being part of the miracle of life!
