Don’t Attempt to DIY This
It is always so easy to fall in love with a koi pond but it is not easy to build one. Unless you have a knack for building ponds or koi pond construction, this should be left to the experts. For one thing, koi pond construction is not goo-looking fishpond but ponds that can sustain koi life for generations of koi.
The Pond Construction Basics
The first step is selecting the site for your pond and the size of the pond. At this point, you have to think of the future generations of koi fish frolicking in your pond. It is right to think that a small fiberglass tank can take care of a dozen small koi. But this fish has a healthy appetite so expect them to outgrow the smallish fiberglass pond.
Once you have the ideal site for your koi pond, it’s time to start digging. You have visualize your pond, whether you want to add a small waterfall or shape your pond oblong or square. The dirt you dug up can be used to shape or mold your pond to your liking.
The next step in your koi pond construction would be to add the pond liner. The liner helps prevent water from the koi pond seeping into the soil. Pond liners are made from a high-grade plastic material, making it more durable and puncture-resistant. There are various choices for a pond liner; you can go either for hard plastic or flexible liner. However, if you willing to spend big, you can go for a concrete pond liner.
The Pond Essentials
The bacteria tank has a tremendous impact on the well-being of your koi. Koi produces a certain type of bacteria that helps maintain the conditioning of the koi water in order for them to thrive. Bacteria tanks helps in keeping this life-giving bacteria alive. Just camouflage the tanks lest they spoil the looks of the pond.
An important addition to the pond is a circulating pump. The pump will keep the pond water circulating; you will need a filter system to get rid of leftover fish food and other scum to prevent the water from being polluted and become a breeding ground for koi diseases. Look for a filter system design that would suit you pond design and size and that is perfect for preventing koi disease.
Post Construction
Once you have the koi pond constructed, check for leaks, and other abnormalities. If you are certain the pond is perfect, then it is time to doll it up. Add lilies and plants to give it a more natural look. Rocks would also be a great addition to the pond. Plus, rocks, artificial or natural ones, would be perfect for constructing waterfalls and can be natural fillers for gaping holes.
When you are set, wait a couple of weeks for the water to be fully circulated before adding the koi. Now that the koi pond construction is done – proper maintenance would be needed if you want to keep enjoying your collection of koi in your koi pond. If you can do koi pond construction, which can take up to nine months if you work on weekends, then you can take care of your koi.
